Fort Canning Hill, previously known as Bukit Larangan and Government Hill, is a landmark since Singapore’s earliest recorded history. In the 14th century, it was likely the site of a palace whose ruins were still visible in 1821. Sir Stamford Raffles had a bungalow built in 1822 on the hill which became the residence of subsequent colonial governors until Fort Canning was built on it in the 1850s. In the 1920s, the fort was vacated and a large covered service reservoir for the city was constructed.
