The cacao tree is native to the Amazon rainforest, first domesticated 5,300 years ago. Chocolate was introduced to Europe by the Spaniards, and became a popular beverage by the mid-17th century. Spaniards also introduced the cacao tree into the Philippines. This image was originally published in Belgium in the year 1863 by Berthe van Nooten, as one of a series of forty Southeast Asian botanical lithographs depicting fruits and flowers.
