Mount Merapi is the "youngest" in a group of volcanoes in southern Java, situated at a subduction zone, where the Sunda Plate meets and rides over the Indo-Australian Plate. It is one of at least 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia. Part of the volcano is located in the Southeastern part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Originally published around the year 1845 by Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn (1809-1864), a German doctor, naturalist, explorer and French Foreign Legion surgeon who spent many years in Java.
