Forest Fire by Raden Saleh ~ Circa 1850

SGD 48.80

Forest Fire is a composition showing animals chased by flames to the edge of a precipice. This relentless and tragic tale of life and death is powerfully narrated through the vivid depiction of the animals and the dramatic use of light and dark on a monumental scale. The original painting was gifted by Saleh to King Willem III of the Netherlands in 1850 and is now on display at the National Gallery of Singapore. Raden Saleh (1807 or 1811–1880) is regarded as one of the most important 19th century artists from Java.
